Dameisha is the queen of the Shenzhen Riviera. It is the closest beach to the city just past the Yantian Container Terminal and the most developed. It is also the most crowded don’t go near it on a July weekend. The beach is set in a natural amphitheatre with mountains behind and steep headlands on either side. The centre of the amphitheatre was originally fishponds and paddy fields but these have been landscaped and turned into artificial lakes that are quite attractive. A wide boulevard lined with palms runs along the beach. The beach itself is wide, sandy and fringed

SHOPPING IN CHINA THE EARLY DAYS Our first shopping expedition in China was in 1975. Things were different then. We’d read our Marx and our Hegel, you know, scientific dialectical materialism, from those who had to those who needed. Something like that. The only problem was that for a theoretically materialistic society there wasn’t much material. It was always the same. You’d wander into a lofty shop hall with dusty shelves were empty. A scowling woman with plaits or a revolutionary bob would eventually acknowledge your presence and spit out Yao shenma! Whaddaya want! You would stutter out your small

TAILORS AT LUOHU: HOW TO GET CLOTHES MADE SHENZHEN Generally the tailors at Luohu pass on the garments to sub-contractors to make. They write down measurements, what you want, and set the price with you. There is not much bargaining in tailoring, as most tailors charge broadly similar prices. When the bespoke garment is returned they inspect it and will send it back for any alterations you ask for. Sometimes, for example, you’ll see one trouser supplier delivering tailored trousers to a number of different tailor shops. Some tailors do their own cutting and then pass the garment on to

The old Shenzhen Museum was dingy, dusty and unimaginative and heavily politicised. So it was with some interest that we looked forward to the opening of the new museum and on the day after Christmas 2008 we were lined up with the best of them. Waiting. The website said 9 a.m. but……..it was 10 a.m…. we’ve become philosophical about such things; so, we sat with our books and watched the crowds grow. And grow. By ten o’clock we were lined up, ten deep. The museum occupies most of the eastern wing of the Shenzhen Civic Centre and we were fully

Situated on the central axis directly behind the Civic Centre, according to many in China, Shenzhen’s government operated just in case you were wondering how it remained open while people seem to go there to read books and not purchase them Central Book City is said to be the world’s biggest bookshop . The centre is really a mall, with many speciality shops for art, music, CDs and videos. Much of the range of products available are unique compilations of videos featuring old Hollywood favorites, beautiful Chinese art books, and esoteric CDs. A great place for browsing.

This is the home of the avant-garde in Shenzhen. Last time we went there, there was a ceremonial destruction by the artists of the works they had been exhibiting for the past two weeks. Performance art, get it? We once had a friend who described the rotting pumpkin in her kitchen as performance art. The gallery opened in January 2005 and since then has been at the absolute frontline of art in Shenzhen. Perhaps strangely, the gallery is under the wing of the He Xiangning Gallery. From something so political to something so anarchic? Strange bedfellows, even if they do

Lianhua Mountain Park is at the northern end of the CBD axis. One of Shenzhen’s most beautiful and peaceful parks, it is recommended if you are looking for a 1-2 hour walk in verdant, tropical surroundings. When you reach the top of the mountain, at the end of a gently sloping path, the reward is an exceptional view that encompasses the span of Shenzhen. The park consists of 166 ha. of urban bushland with forests, a lake and paths through garden beds. It is shaped like a lotus flower, thus the name Lianhua means lotus flower in Chinese. The site

A cold January morning, 1975. We are rugged up against the Siberian wind under the pillars of the old Kowloon Railway station at the Hong Kong Star Ferry. A China Travel Service guide is busy tagging our luggage. There is no independent travel to China in the 1970s. A China Travel guide must accompany everybody and China Travel is a branch of the Ministry of Public Security. We are en route to Beijing. There are no direct flights between Hong Kong and any city in China. If you want to fly to Beijing you have to do it via Tokyo,

SHENZHEN CURIO WORLD Shenzhen isn’t a great place for buying antiques. There’s plenty around but we suspect that most Tang and Song, and a fair amount of Qing is fake. There is also a general legal ban on the export of antiques from before 1911. This may limit your enjoyment of Shenzhen Curio World to wandering round and taking in the atmosphere. It’s a big open square surrounded by 3-storey buildings. The buildings are home to lots of antique stores and it’s fun just wandering round them. On weekends the open area is filled with hawkers from all over China
