PUU KA PELE FOREST RESERVE Located in the northwestern part of the island of Kauai, Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve features 2,000-foot-deep canyons, scenic valleys with stone ruins, streams, and the Waimea River. There are areas of scrub vegetation as well as dense forests here. Activities: Hiking and backpacking are available on several trails which lead down through Waimea Canyon, Waialae Canyon, and Koaie Canyon. Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. Camping Regulations: There are several designated camping areas in the canyons, and camping is restricted to these sites. A permit must be obtained from the Division of Forestry office.

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK This National Park on the island of Maui protects 10,023-foot Mount Haleakala, an inactive volcano which has a crater with a seven mile diameter. The park’s landscape includes high cinder cones, lava ash, and other volcanic scenery. Also in the park is the lush Kipahula Valley, with rainforest, grasslands, and coastal cliffs. There are several streams with waterfalls and pools, and an exotic birdlife, plantlife, and wildlife, including native and non-native species. Activities: Thirty-six miles of trails are open to backpacking and hiking. Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. Some trails may be used by horseback riders.
