WHERE? A 90-minute drive from Cape Town’s city centre, this coastal getaway is just the ticket if you’re looking for a quiet seaside escape. WHY GO? The charming little fishing village of Churchhaven is one of SA’s best-kept secrets, and the ideal spot to get away from the hustle and bustle. Located in the West Coast National Park, on the outskirts of the multihued Postberg Flower Reserve, it comprises a collection of renovated fishermen’s houses. If you decide to explore the surrounding reserve, which is blanketed with indigenous shrubs and delicate fynbos throughout the year, be sure to head back before 6.30pm in summer when the park’s gates close. Country Revolution’s Domestic Legacy While liberating for common white men, the Revolution had mixed results for other Countrys. Nonelite white men entered local politics in increasing numbers, property ownership increased as frontier lands opened up for white settlement, and aristocratic pretenses were attacked openly. A postwar economic depression forced many poor soldiers to sell their land bounties, earned through military service, to predatory speculators.
