Terry arrives on her own and drives us to the Narwhal Inn near the airport to rest for a few hours and also gives us back the liner bags containing the clothes we left with her. The rooms at the hotel are small and windowless but after Camp Hazen they seem like pure luxury. There’s a communal washroom where I can shave and shower and change into some reasonable, ordinary clothes. For the fun of it I decide to put on a tie. It feels rather strange after doing without one for so long but no one comments. There’s a

Pam prepares a delicious meal for us, steaks, sweetcorn, mushrooms, potatoes, followed by several kinds of cookies, Canadian style. This is washed down by punch, orange juice and coffee. I help collect the dishes and whilst stacking tell Pam what I hope is an appropriate story. A husky rushes into a Western Union office and asks to send a telegram to his girlfriend. The message reads, ‘Bow wow wow, Bow wow wow.’ The clerk looks at the form and says, ‘For the same money you could add another Bow wow.’ The husky barks back, ‘That would just make it sound

The luggage is loaded on to a trailer attached to a snow tractor and it trundles off at a leisurely pace to the actual camp. We set off in pursuit. It’s about 10 p.m. The only way to ever know the time is to look at a watch as the day never changes. That’s why it’s always so important to change your watch as you hit another time zone, otherwise you’d become totally confused. Camp Hazen isn’t a luxury hotel or even a simple hostel. It’s a small, corrugated iron hut with just two dormitories, one communal eating area and

The first woman to visit Antarctica was Caroline Mikkelsson, the wife of a Norwegian whaling captain, when she stepped ashore at Vestford Hills. Edith Ronnie and Jennifer Darlington were the first women to winter in Antarctica in 1947 48 on Stonington Island on the Antarctic Peninsula. There continue to be many who attempt to cross the Antarctic or reach the South Pole in a new or special way in order to be ‘the first’ in their particular goal. The Norwegian Erling Kagge was the first to ski alone to the South Pole in 1993 (having with Borge Ousland in 1990

After an even earlier false start, Amundsen finally set off across the ice shelf on 19 October 1911, with 48 dogs, 5 men, and 4 sledges. Scott was unable to follow him out as his much larger team had immediate problems with the donkeys which were having difficulties in dealing with the intense cold. He finally set out on 2 November 1911 and the pressure this delay caused never allowed him and his team to find a way to catch up. Of course Amundsen never knew when Scott had set off and throughout the push for the Pole, Amundsen remained

The enormity of the task that faced those endeavouring to sail southwards and the overwhelming odds against success mostly turned thoughts of further exploration to other areas, particularly again to the Arctic which was considered to be more easily accessible. Therefore for some 50 years little further was achieved in the Antarctic region. There were a few attempts to travel deeper in but they didn’t accomplish very much. There was some continuing scientific interest but the research stations were all set up outside Antarctica and therefore were not really effective. The mysterious white region still attracted periodic attention but the

Many creatures and plant life have longer lives compared to those in warmer climates and grow at a slower rate. This is connected with the way in which creatures hibernate during the intensely cold winters and how some life forms, including humans, can put themselves into a state of suspended animation. Some Tibetan monks, themselves Zen masters, have perfected this technique, so perhaps the stories of Shangri-La and the Himalayan peoples who could live for centuries are not so completely far-fetched. Our own lifespan expectancy is even now starting to reach 120 years. The Tibetan monks can also raise their

Homeward Bound After flying for 700 km the first stopover is Cambridge Bay at 5.15 a.m. and I get off for 15 minutes to stretch my legs. I look up and see three white tundra swans flying majestically across the sky. They are a poignant reminder of all I’ve experienced and I watch them slowly vanish into the distance. We take-off again at 5.40. Then it’s on to Yellowknife at 7.10, leaving there at 7.25. Some new passengers have joined the flight and one sits next to me, on my right. Ralph Berg, a taxidermist, the first I’ve ever met.

Antarctic Dreams My primary dream of travelling to the Antarctic and then on to the South Pole had long pre-dated my great desire to reach the North Pole. Now I had achieved one and some years have elapsed, how was I to achieve the other? What would be the initial motivating force to start me on that very long journey? In order to deal with the complicated logistics, the costs and the time involved there would probably have to be something particularly special that would point me southwards, to the bottom of the world. Otherwise I’d just keep my dream

The voids are grouped in a wide square, in some way forming an open room, through which the winds and the elements can pass at will. It is something of nature, for nature, yet not intruding against but blending with nature. Portals through which giants of another time could have passed. The strength needed to cut and form the blocks and make certain they wouldn’t collapse in on themselves seems almost to have been superhuman. Andy had toiled from the moment he had arrived and with the perpetual daylight had gone with very little sleep to finish the voids in
