It crosses Ozark National Forest, leading from Fort Smith State Park northeast to the Buffalo National River. The trail passes over mountains, with some fine views, and leads through oak-hickory forests. Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. Camping Regulations: Except for the westernmost six miles of the trail, camping is allowed along the way, as are campfires. No permits are required. The Pittsburgh Reduction Company (later known as Alcoa) recruited Mexican, Italian, and Chinese workers, in addition to African Americans, to mine aluminum ore during the interwar years.
