Comprised of two huge tracts in the Rockies of west-central Colorado, White River National Forest includes some outstanding high mountain wilderness, with lofty peaks and some elevations over 14,000 feet. There are also deep canyons, a 10,000-foot high plateau, many rock formations, conifer-forested slopes, and hilly grasslands, plus numerous lakes and streams. Elk, black bear, mule deer, mountain lion, and coyote are among the wildlife. Traveling in Colorado BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL MONUMENT 13,672 acres. Situated in west-central Colorado, this National Monument protects 12 miles of the steep and dramatic canyon of the Gunnison River. The area includes pinyon-juniper woodlands and brushlands, with mule deer, elk, and bighorn sheep among the wildlife. Activities: A few easy hiking trails run along the rim. Backpacking as well as hiking are possible on several unmarked and difficult routes which lead down into the canyon. Horseback riding is limited to one trail along the rim.
