Located east of San Diego in southern California, this state park includes mountains and mesas, meadows and grasslands, with stands of pine and fir, cedar and oak, and some desert. Highest point is 6,512-foot Cuyamaca Peak. Mule deer, mountain lion, bobcat, and fox are among the wildlife. Activities: Backpacking and hiking are available on 110 miles of trails, including a section of the California Riding and Hiking Trail. Horses are allowed on most trails. Cross-country skiing is also possible here when there’s adequate snow, and mountain biking is permitted on some trails
