YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE GROUP THERAPY OR ROAM ALONE? If you wish to experience the great outdoors without having to worry about little details like navigation, you are advised to seek out other walkers. The benefits include: • someone else to do the map reading so you can admire the view without having to stop and check where you’re going • other people to chat to • plenty of people to carry you if you trip and break a leg • a comfy coach to pick you up at the other end There are a few negative points that should

The differences between all three varieties of north are usually indicated on the map that hikers use, but as we’ve seen, the variation of magnetic north is constantly changing, so the variation mentioned on a map is likely to be inaccurate. Hikers can resolve this by searching for the Pole Star, but this is only of use if you get lost at night. The Pole Star sits directly above the earth’s North Pole, give or take a couple of degrees.

NATIONAL TRAILS The creme de la creme of long-distance routes are the National Trails. These are the most famous names, the ones that are funded by central government.
