The new vision required both conceptual and physical foundations. Across South Africa, workshops were held to assess the opinions of community leaders in townships – many of these still deeply scarred by the factional violence of the 1970s and 1980s. A strong partnership had already been established with a new NGO, Trees for Africa (TFA), which targeted the environmental needs of impoverished townships. Gradually a coherent programme was crafted, with the technical expertise available in the NBI’s gardens, and the fund-raising and social-engagement skills of TFA forming a successful model for moving from garden to community. Designing Eden At establishment on 1 July 1913, Kirstenbosch covered 134 hectares. Gradual additions as indicated on this map brought the total area owned by the Garden to 199.2 hectares by 1992, with an additional 299.8 hectares being managed as part of the Garden since 1922. The position of the original Leendertsbos is indicated by a dashed line. Botanical gardens, as national or private institutions, went through a vibrant renaissance during the late 20th century, and this

The rise of indigenous plant horticulture Kirstenbosch is deservedly famous for its splendid displays ofpincushion proteas such as the yellow Leucospermun reflexum var. luteum (front) and L. cordifolium (behind). The famously rich South African flora presented an exciting challenge to the Garden’s horticulturists. The talent, patience and skills (and no doubt the Kew training) of many of Kirstenbosch’s horticulturists – Mathews, Thorns, Werner, Winter – changed the face of indigenous plant horticulture in South Africa. Soon after the establishment of Kirstenbosch, plants began to be donated to the Garden from all corners of the country, supported by free rail transport

Emerging from the rapidly developing international environmental consciousness of the late 20th century was the realisation that many environmental problems were soluble only through collaborative multidisciplinary research. During the years of relative isolation, South Africa had initiated many programmes to address complex environmental problems, based on the philosophy of cooperative science that embraced the efforts of universities, government agencies and the private sector. Without any dedicated budgets or specially appointed staff for these themes, from its inception in 1990, NBI tracked down funds, inspired young researchers, and developed partnerships with like-minded individuals and institutions both nationally and internationally. The commitment of the Kirstenbosch team is no better exemplified than by the 52 years’ service of David ‘Driver’ Mclean. At the age of 13 he joined the staff as a messenger – the bicycle provided was far larger than David. After serving in the S.A. Army in the Middle East from 1939 to 1943, he returned to Kirstenbosch as a driver of tractors, trucks and buses, as well as his beloved front-end loader. The Jacobs family are Kirstenbosch

As a weak coldfront approaches the Cape, a low-pressure system along the coast draws hot air off the interior, resulting in a ‘berg ’ wind, with temperatures at Cape Town surging to over 30°C, before dropping by more than 15° as the front passes by. (Satellite images courtesy of the South African Weather Services) It is usual to have delicate high cirrus clouds – often as lacy ‘mackerel skies’ – preceding the fronts. And, before this, the passage of hot, dry ‘berg’ winds rushing off the interior plateau is a frequent phenomenon. A point of enduring curiosity is why Kirstenbosch

Creating a haven for succulents Mass displays of mesems (locally known as ‘vygies ’) include purple Lampranthus amoenus in the foreground, with red Drosanthemum speciosum and yellow Drosanthemum bicolor higher up the slope. South Africa, at last count, had some 4 000 species of succulent plants – about 40 per cent of the global total. They range in size from the tiny stone plants of the Knersvlakte along the west coast to the giant baobabs of the bushveld. Usually found in hot, arid climates, succulents store water in their leaves, stems or roots to tide them over extended dry periods.
