As in so many matters, Pearson, in his 1911 paper, was ahead of his time when he observed: ‘Protection, to be effective, must be applied, and strictly applied, to areas, not to selected species.’ A few ‘flagship’ habitats and species were chosen as case studies that could be replicated as experience developed. A second leg of the Threatened Species Programme (TSP) was to overcome the challenge of limited resources. Instead

A necklace of isolated patches of moist, Afrotemperate Forests, starting in Ethiopia, stretches southwards through East Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the KwaZulu-Natal escarpment, ending in the ravines of Kirstenbosch. Here remnant natural forests in the Nursery Ravine and Skeleton Gorge protect some of the southernmost outliers of the rich Afrotemperate Forest flora. The forests on Ruwenzori, Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, and many of the mountains of the eastern escarpment, carry a similar but much richer forest flora to these relict patches in Kirstenbosch, which remain as reminders of an

Key to the new approach was the development of resource materials and effective preparation of school teachers in advance of visits to the Garden. With only two full-time staff, the programme was mobilised by developing a team of volunteer ‘education officers’, mostly drawn from people with prior teaching experience and a passion for Kirstenbosch, and who receive intensive training. The first volunteers’ course in 1993 had ‘no curriculum, no materials, no course outlines, but huge amounts of enthusiasm and a desire to learn’. Students visit the ‘Garden of Extinction ’ to learn about species targetedfor restoration projects. Since 1993, the

Edith Stephens (1884-1966) was a strongly independent woman, occasionally quirky in teaching method and dress, but much loved by the generations of students that she taught during her 29 years at the University of Cape Town. She was one of the three young South African students, on scholarships at Cambridge, whose infectious enthusiasm for the fynbos inspired Robert Compton to seek his future in the Cape (see page 36). Lady Robinson was the wife of Sir Hercules Robinson, Queen Victoria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, and a colonial official of considerable stature. A special train was arranged for the convenience of the party from Government House – a measure of the personal interest in matters botanical that was entertained by many of the political leaders, and those in business, of the Victorian era.

The rise of indigenous plant horticulture Kirstenbosch is deservedly famous for its splendid displays ofpincushion proteas such as the yellow Leucospermun reflexum var. luteum (front) and L. cordifolium (behind). The famously rich South African flora presented an exciting challenge to the Garden’s horticulturists. The talent, patience and skills (and no doubt the Kew training) of many of Kirstenbosch’s horticulturists – Mathews, Thorns, Werner, Winter – changed the face of indigenous plant horticulture in South Africa. Soon after the establishment of Kirstenbosch, plants began to be donated to the Garden from all corners of the country, supported by free rail transport

In reality, ex situ approaches have serious limitations and the extensive living collections in Kirstenbosch and the other SANBI gardens have been reviewed and restructured because of this. Firstly, with a flora of over 20 000 species, of which 25 per cent are of ‘conservation concern’, there is simply not enough nursery space to house even a small proportion of such species. Secondly, living collections need highly specialised horticultural skills to manage. Thirdly, many of the most threatened species are difficult to grow, short-lived or disease-prone under nursery conditions. And, finally, the very small sample populations that can be maintained

As a weak coldfront approaches the Cape, a low-pressure system along the coast draws hot air off the interior, resulting in a ‘berg ’ wind, with temperatures at Cape Town surging to over 30°C, before dropping by more than 15° as the front passes by. (Satellite images courtesy of the South African Weather Services) It is usual to have delicate high cirrus clouds – often as lacy ‘mackerel skies’ – preceding the fronts. And, before this, the passage of hot, dry ‘berg’ winds rushing off the interior plateau is a frequent phenomenon. A point of enduring curiosity is why Kirstenbosch
