3-7-77 Instilled Fear in Lawless Montanans Look closely and you’ll see the numbers 3-7-77 in some interesting places: on the shoulder patches of Montana Highway Patrol officers, on the jumpsuits of Montana Air National Guard pilots, and, most revealing, above the front entrance to the historic Robber’s Roost roadhouse outside Laurin. The origin of these numbers has always been a mystery, but in the late 1870s and early 1880s everyone in Montana’s gold country knew what they represented: vigilante justice. The numbers were a reference to an 1860s gang who hunted down thieving road agents and hanged them without trials.

This worthwhile drive explores the hidden world of the Tobacco Root Mountains, a burly range that’s relatively unappreciated compared to the nearby Madison, Pioneer, and Pintler Mountains, despite its raw beauty and 43 peaks towering above 10,000 feet many of them still unnamed. Few remote areas offer a better glimpse of Montana’s mining past than the Tobacco Roots, which are littered with rusting equipment from the pick-and-shovel days. Pony is an old gold-mining town of about 100 families clinging to the Tobacco Roots’ northeastern foothills, and the South Boulder Road pierces the heart of the range, providing trail access to

AN ELECTRIC HISTORY: ALONG THE OLD MILWAUKEE ROAD As you drive US 12 between Roundup and Harlowton, look carefully and you’ll eventually identify an abandoned grade along the Musselshell River that represents a railroad history unlike any other in Montana. The Chicago, St. Paul, Milwaukee & Pacific Railroad better known as the Milwaukee Road operated trains along this stretch from the late 1800s until the mid-1970s. In the 212 miles between Harlowton and Avery, Idaho, the tracks were electrified beginning in 1914. HARLOWTON IS THE HUB OF THE MILWAUKEE ROAD HISTORIC DISTRICT AND HOME OF E57B, ONE OF THE LAST

For the sake of lodging and dining options, we actually start the Warrior Trail in Hardin (pop. 3,730), a mixed agricultural community of Anglos and Indians on the edge of the Crow Reservation. Starting the loop, Hardin is largely nondescript but does have a Custer’s Last Stand Reenactment in a field northwest of town every June. Some historical buildings are worth seeing, too, including St. John’s Catholic Church and Hardin Depot, but the area’s history is best captured at the Big Horn County Historical Museum & Visitor Center (406-665-1671). The 22-acre site features more than two dozen outdoor structures and
