An hour northwest of Barcelona, the mountain of Montserrat is where a wandering 9th-century mountaineer had a blinding vision of the Virgin Mary. In the 11th century, a monastery was founded to worship the Virgin, and the site has since evolved into a major pilgrimage center. The monastery’s ornate basilica is above PI. Creu. To the right of the main chapel is a route through the side chapels that leads to the 12th-century Romanesque La Moreneta (the black Virgin Mary), Montserrat’s venerated icon. (Walkway open July-Sept. daily 8-10:30am and noon-6:30pm. Nov.-June M-F 8-10:30am, noon-6:30pm, and 7:30-8:15pm.
