New Zealand Google Maps Their original application had been to plant 60 acres in three lots of 20 acres. Phil Rose was not one to convert their farm to grape growing without further investigation. He knew the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries scientist Paul Pollack who was now stationed at Gisborne and specialising in vineyard management so they went to see him. Whereas Pollack was very supportive of their winegrowing plans, the Gisborne growers they visited were saying: ‘What are you going to grow grapes in Marlborough for? It’s too cold down there. What are you putting in?’ And I

Maps Of New Zealand Further vineyard and winery expansion The expansion of the wine industry in Marlborough to the present occurs in three further stages: the remainder of the 1980s, the 1990s, and the 2000s. In each stage a different geography of the vine emerges, strongly influenced by the expansion of existing enterprises and by new grape growers and wineries entering the industry. In the early 1980s, with neo-liberal reform looming, it would have been difficult, perhaps impossible, to predict Marlborough’s future sequence over these next three decades. Marlborough probably fared better than any other wine region during the difficult

One of the advantages of cool, dry climates is that it becomes easier to impose a moderate water deficit than in a hot climate The optimum ripeness window on an individual berry may last only for a very short period of timeBecause cooler climates extend the optimum ripeness window they are more likely to enable the production of great wines. Martin’s argument can be taken further. The flatter temperature curve in the wine regions of New Zealand encourages a more ‘gentle’ sequence of growth of the vine with sufficient hot spells to stimulate the ripening of the berries. In such

Winemaker initiatives and scientific developments Two developments in winemaking and viticulture helped change the attitudes within the industry and among the wine-buying public. From the mid-1970s a series of young Auckland winemakers began meeting every fortnight to taste their wines against imported wines of quality. They recognised the need for lower yields and ripe grapes if similar standards of quality were to be achieved. Results from competitions, such as the Easter Show and Air New Zealand wine awards, were beginning to reinforce the association between lower yields and the quality of wines from vinifera varieties. The arrival of microclimatologist and

From 1970, a second period is characterised by the rise of Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. By 1980, both Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay each had twice the area in vines of the Auckland region. Gisborne’s growth resulted from Montana Wines continuing its aggressive expansion by letting contracts for landowners to grow grapes. Corbans and Penfolds were quick to respond by arranging contracts with other landholders in Gisborne. A series of well-established, but smaller, Auckland-based wine companies – such as Babich, Nobilo and Matua Valley – followed the larger companies and sourced grapes from these new regions.

Auckland West Auckland vineyards and wineries in 1960 were small, mixed holdings (Figure 2.1). All but a few of them combined growing grapes with orcharding, and most ran some livestock on the rest of their property. A few still practised market gardening. Over 90 per cent were owned by people who at the time were called Yugoslavs, after their country of origin, but colloquially known as ‘Dallies’ because many came from the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. They were family enterprises sometimes involving two families and more than one generation. The average size of vineyards in Henderson-Oratia was 5 acres (about

The country is said to be more British than Britain, though various Europeans have settled there and mixed with the native Maori. Altogether there are about three million people. The number one destination for New Zealanders is Australia, followed by Singapore and Fiji. Geologically New Zealand is believed to be a separate rise of land, formed vocanically. Separated by one thousand miles of the Tasman Sea from Australia, it was probably never a part of Antarctica as was Australia. The two major islands, North Island and South Island, that form most of New Zealand are separated by straits that the
