Highest elevation here is 7,055-foot Grayback Mountain. The forests are of mixed conifers and hardwoods, with old-growth Douglas fir and redwood. Wildlife includes elk, mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, and gray fox. The centerpiece here is Crater Lake, at an elevation of 6,176 feet. It’s six miles across and over 1,500 feet deep. The lake lies in the cal-dera of a collapsed volcano. Nearby are several mountains, with elevations from under 5,000 feet to over 8,900 feet. Highest point is 8,926-foot Mount Scott. There are old-growth conifer forests of hemlock, fir, and pine. Wildlife includes elk, black bear, coyote, and fox. Activities: Backpacking and hiking are available on more than 100 miles
