Consisting of a 79,000-acre tract along with other units in central Pennsylvania, this state forest covers a number of mountain ridgeswith sandstone formations, other rugged terrain, and views from elevations as high as 2,400 feet. Included are the 4,800-acre Thickhead Wild Area and five small designated Natural Areas, with streams, swamps, and the Juniata River. There are forests of oak, spruce, and fir, with some virgin hemlock and white pine, plus rhododendron and mountain laurel. Among the wildlife are deer, bear, and fox. 					<description><![CDATA[<p>Pennsylvania Guide for Tourist TUSCARORA STATE FOREST 91,000 acres. This state forest consists of three parcels of land in the Tuscarora Mountain area of south-central Pennsylvania. It&#8217;s a region of low mountain ridges and valleys with numerous streams. Included is a designated Wild Area, the 5,382-acre Tuscarora Wild Area. There are forests of oak, virgin hemlock, and pine, along with mountain laurel and azalea. Among the wildlife are whitetailed deer, black bear, fox, and wild turkey. Activities: Backpacking and hiking are possible on about 200 miles of trails, including 23 miles of the 105-mile Tuscarora Trail (see entry page 252). </p>
