THE NAVAJO NATION The enormous Navajo Nation (the Navajo Indian Reservation) in northeast Arizona comprises almost one-fifth of the state. Included is a portion of the Painted Desert, with mountains, canyons, mesas, and plateaus. Of special note here are famous Monument Valley, with its huge sandstone formations, along with the Little Colorado River Gorge, Marble Canyon, and the canyons of the San Juan River. Activities: Hiking and backpacking are available on some unmaintained trails and paths. Visitors are asked to stay on trails and established routes.
