North Island New Zealand Map The site of the Elms vineyard is especially favourable. Its shallow valley faces due north and is protected from wind by low hills on either side. About 5 kilometres to its west, the main ridge of the Carrick Range runs north-south. Its highest peak is Mt Difficulty (1285 m) and most of the ridge is over 1000 metres. This ridge protects the Elms and Calvert vineyards, indeed most of the Bannockburn vineyards, from the worst of the nor’westers. The Calvert vineyard is across the road from the Elms vineyard. Calvert’s slopes are gentler and its

New Zealand Map South Island Four and a half tonnes per acre is over 10.5 tonnes per hectare. These are very high yields compared to those for the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards of a region such as Burgundy, or even Sancerre, where yields are restricted under the appellation laws. It does appear that even when produced at higher yields in the natural environment of the Marlborough region (and some other parts of New Zealand), Sauvignon Blanc grapes do reach an intensity of flavour that is more difficult to achieve in other parts of the world. After the establishment

South New Zealand Map Well, at that time Kim was probably at the cutting edge of the industry. He had varietals, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, just table wine. And I used to go up there weekends and talk with him, work with him a bit and used to say, well you know, ‘I’d like to start a small winery’, that sort of thing. And in the end he said, ‘Well, Gary Glazebrook comes out and says the same as what you do, so perhaps you two should talk to each other.’ So Kim introduced us. Alan Limmer adds his own

Map Of South Island Of New Zealand These new grape growers had much to learn about growing grapes for table wine. However, being mainly families with horticultural knowledge, they learned quickly. Most of them initially grew Muller Thurgau and aimed for high yields – often at least 10 tonnes to the acre (24 tonnes to the hectare) – to gain maximum revenue. Muller Thurgau was, of course, ascendant by 1980 with 1819 hectares of it planted in New Zealand, whereas Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, the two vinifera varieties with the largest share of the national vineyard at the time, had

Grape growers and grape varieties on the Poverty Bay flats The vineyards of any winegrowing enterprise evolve as more suitable varieties are discovered, new clones emerge, or the demographics of wine drinkers change and people favour different wines. Philip Gregan, CEO of New Zealand Winegrowers, talks about the influence of ‘legacy’ on the mix of grape varieties grown in different regions of New Zealand. He is referring to the varieties and clones of grapes that were available and popular when the region was first planted but have subsequently been pulled out and the vineyard replanted with other varieties. Some parcels

Viticultural imperatives in cool climates Too cold can be as troublesome as too hot. Given New Zealand’s cool climate, getting the grapes physiologically ripe with aromas and flavours that express the variety and where it is being grown is the primary viticultural imperative. Viticulturists achieve ripeness by managing the architecture of the vine and level of the crop through pruning and rubbing off unwanted buds and by managing the canopy to maximise photosynthesis. Successfully achieving these objectives assumes that nutrient levels and the moisture regime in the soils and vine are also effectively monitored and managed. The second imperative is

Tim Finn The presence of these two has always been a source of potential tension in the industry and has influenced many aspects of its organisation including the way that the industry governs itself, initially through the Wine Institute of New Zealand, now New Zealand Winegrowers. Today, as in its growth phase, many of the larger firms rely on specialist grape growers to provide some proportion of their crop. Many of these, like a number of the smaller winemaking firms, are family-based producers. Growing grapes, making wine and selling it is bound to result in disappointments. Frost threatens, mildews invade
