Texas Vacations PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE Located on the Gulf Coast of south Texas, 65-mile-long Padre Island National Seashore protects a sizable portion of a long barrier island. It has one of the greatest expanses of wild seashore in the country. The island has beautiful sandy beaches, dunes, and some grasslands. Deer and coyote are among the wildlife, along with shore birds and marine life which includes dolphin and whale. Activities: Fifty-five miles of roadless beach are open to backpacking and hiking, and also to 4-wheel drive vehicles. The swimming here is superb. Fishing is allowed, but hunting is not.
