Situated in north-central Pennsylvania, Susque-hannock State Forest includes rough and steep terrain, with some elevations over 2,500 feet. Of special interest here is the 31,000-acre Hammersley Wild Area. There are also a number of streams, and the region is forested with oak, birch, cherry, and some old-growth hemlock. Located on the Allegheny Plateau in the north-central part of the state, and with some rugged terrain, Tioga State Forest is noted for 800-foot-deep Pine Creek Gorge, known as Pennsylvania&#8217;s Grand Canyon. The area is hardwood-forested, with oak, black cherry, birch, and some hemlock. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, black bear, and fox. Activities: There&#8217;s one major marked and maintained trail here for hiking and backpacking: the 30-mile West Rim Trail, which follows the west rim of Pine Creek Gorge and offers fine vistas.
