The Grand Loop Road going north from West Thumb follows the lakeshore closely most of the way to Fishing Bridge Junction, almost 21 miles (33 km) away. You’ll catch glimpses of America’s highest large freshwater lake and its surrounding mountains. The Absaroka Range is beyond the lake to the east, and the Red Mountains are to the south. There are many places to pull over by the lakeside to look, take pictures, picnic, or fish. Road Log NOTE: There are several short side roads along this stretch of the Grand Loop Road.

West Thumb history and facilities NOTE: Consult the map of West Thumb Geyser Basin on 138 for West Thumb facilities. The information and bookstore building, where the Yellowstone Association sells books and pamphlets, is housed in the former ranger station dating from 1925, now used as a warming hut in winter. ©(5) S©(4) Reached from this parking lot are the West Thumb picnic area, two hiking trails, and the West Thumb Geyser Basin boardwalks. There is no running water. The rather strange name of this spot, West Thumb, refers to the shape of this bay in Yellowstone Lake. Early explorers

Yellowstone Lake Overlook Trail is a loop of a little over 2 miles (3.2 km). Start by walking southwest from the West Thumb parking lot. After crossing the South Entrance Road (where there’s limited roadside parking), turn right for the shortest way to the top of Savage Hill, so called by concessionaire employees, who call themselves Savages. Pass a riot of wildflowers in the burned forest, and notice a couple of modest combinations of mud pots, fumaroles, and hot pools on your way up the moderately strenuous 400-foot (120 m) climb. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with a
