The Grand Loop Road going north from West Thumb follows the lakeshore closely most of the way to Fishing Bridge Junction, almost 21 miles (33 km) away. You’ll catch glimpses of America’s highest large freshwater lake and its surrounding mountains. The Absaroka Range is beyond the lake to the east, and the Red Mountains are to the south. Yellowstone Lake Overlook Trail is a loop of a little over 2 miles (3.2 km). Start by walking southwest from the West Thumb parking lot. Walking toward the lake from the parking lot, stay to the right to find the Thumb Paint Pots . The paint pots were named Mud Puffs originally and perhaps more appropriately.
