This state forest in north-central Pennsylvania has ridges and plateaus, valleys with streams, a few ponds, and scenic Loyalsock Creek. There are two designated Natural Areas. Forests are of cherry, maple, beech, and other northern hardwoods. Wildlife includes deer, bear, and fox. Activities: There&#8217;s one major trail here for backpacking and hiking, a portion of the 59-mile Loyalsock Trail (see entry page 253). Cross-country skiing is possible on some trails in winter. Whitewater canoeing is available on Loyalsock Creek. Hunting and fishing are permitted in season. Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed in most parts </p>

A key figure overlooked during this era is Manuel Lisa, the St. Louis Spanish American. Not long after Lewis and Clark returned from the Pacific, Lisa put into place an ambitious and prosperous plan he had developed with information collected by the famous exploratory expedition.
