This situation led to lots of interaction between people and bears, and bears injured nearly 50 people each year. In response to the problems with bears and concern about the possible extinction of the grizzly bear, the park changed its policies. The park closed dumps where bears had fed, began using bear-proof garbage cans, and strongly cautioned visitors against feeding bears or leaving </p>

Recent estimates put the number of grizzlies in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem at about 500 to 600 (with at least half that many in the park itself); black bears are not as closely watched, but now their number is similar or a little larger. The so-called black bear (Ursus americanus) may be brown or cinnamon colored as well as black. To decide whether a bear you see at a distance is a black or a grizzly, try to observe its overall size.
