Located in northern California, this enormous National Forest encompasses outstanding high-mountain scenery, with lofty snow-covered peaks, rock pinnacles, lava flows, glaciers, and deep canyons. Highest point is 14,162-foot Mount Shasta, second highest volcano in the Cascades. There are also beautiful lakes and rivers, streams with waterfalls, mountain meadows, areas of chaparral, and mixed forests of fir, pine, and cedar, including old-growth stands. Among the wildlife are mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, and fox.
