SHASTA-TRINITY NATIONAL FOREST CALIFORNIA

2,159,000 acres. Located in northern California, this enormous National Forest encompasses outstanding

high-mountain scenery, with lofty snow-covered peaks, rock pinnacles, lava flows, glaciers, and deep canyons. Highest point is 14,162-foot Mount Shasta, second highest volcano in the Cascades.

There are also beautiful lakes and rivers, streams with waterfalls, mountain meadows, areas of chaparral, and mixed forests of fir, pine, and cedar, including old-growth stands. Among the wildlife are mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, and fox.

The National Forest has five designated wilderness areas: a portion of the 500,000-acre Trinity Alps Wilderness, the 38,200-acre Mount Shasta Wilderness, 37,094 acres of the 109,000-acre Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness, the 8,200-acre Chan-chelulla Wilderness, and the 7,300-acre Castle Crags Wilderness.

Activities: Some 1,400 miles of trails are available for backpacking and hiking, including a 154-mile section of the Pacific Crest Trail (see entry page 113). Difficulty varies from easy to very strenuous. High trails may be under snow until July.

Horseback riding is allowed on most trails, and cross-country skiing is possible in some areas during the winter. White-water canoeing and kayaking are available on the Trinity River. Mount Shasta and other mountains attract technical climbers. Fishing is another option, and hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout most of the National Forest, except near public use areas or where otherwise prohibited. Wilderness permits are required only for camping in the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness.

Campfires are allowed but discouraged, and should be kept small. A stove is recommended for cooking. It’s necessary to obtain a fire permit in order to build a campfire or use a stove. Campsites in wilderness areas should be away from meadows and at least 100 feet from water sources.
