SHENZHEN DONGMEN The Dongmen market area dates back to the Ming Dynasty in the 17th Century and is said to have been the busiest street in Shenzhen for over 100 years. It had a big revival in the 1920’s in the Sun Yat-sen period and again in the 1980’s, when it was restored. Lao Jie Old Street is the metro stop for the Dongmen pedestrian shopping area and is the most popular station for getting on and off the metro. PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN THE CITY This is the easiest way to get around for the non-Chinese speaker. Metro Stations are shown in Pin Yin romanisation as well as in Chinese characters and announcements are made in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. Unfortunately once you arrive at your end station exit signs are only in Chinese characters but once you go towards an exit some signs are in English. It’s better than it used to be but you still have a chance of having fake notes passed off on you. Y50 notes are the worst. As a rule of thumb, never accept a Y50 note in change from a taxi driver at night. Fake Y50 notes often lack the silver thread that is on the genuine notes. The other note that can be fake is Y100.
