The city of Concepcion was founded in 1773 to protect territories to the south from attacks by indigenous tribes and the neighboring Portuguese. This area saw much action towards the end of the Triple Alliance War. Mariscal Lopez met his demise in Cerro Cora (now a national park) to the east and his wake was held in Concepcion. With its strategic location on the Paraguay River, Concepcion became an important shipping hub during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Yerba mate and wood arrived from Paraguayan provinces to the east as well as the Brazilian province of Matto Grosso. These

From Coronel Oviedo, Route 8 extends south through the department of Guaira which offers tourists several interesting attractions. First up is the quaint town of Yataity where the majority of the country’s finely woven and embroidered ao po’i textiles are made. Nearby is the German colony of Colonia Independencia. This is an excellent place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Ybytyryzu mountain range, from afar or up close and personal, depending on how much outdoor activity you are up for. Villarrica is the capital of the department but still manages to maintain a small town feel. During February and

Coming from Villarrica the turn off is on the right-hand side, about three blocks before the road curves sharply to the left. With the exception of Hotel Tilinksi all lodging options are before the right-hand entrance to the center of town itself (approximately seventeen kilometers from Mbocayaty).

Nestled at the base of the Ybytyruzu mountains the town of Colonia Independencia, known as La Tierra del Vino y del Sol (the land of wine and sun) was founded by German immigrants after World War II. Unlike the majority of Paraguay’s German-influenced towns Colonia Independencia is not populated by Mennonites. Rather than religious freedom, the town’s German inhabitants are mostly drawn by a sense of adventure and the chance to stretch their retirement pensions abroad in an already established German community. Though Colonia Independencia also has Paraguayan inhabitants there is a decidedly German feel to the town. Street signs

Along Routes 3, 5, & 10 Few visitors venture into the sparsely populated northern half of eastern Paraguay. This area, consisting of the departments of San Pedro, Amambay, Canindeyu and Concepcion is less developed, with fewer roads and less infrastructure than their southern counterparts. While safety concerns have lately kept the flow of tourists to a minimum, each department has sites worth visiting. Heading northeast from Asuncion, Route 3 passes through the satellite cities of Mariano Roque Alonzo (where the Trans Chaco Highway begins) and Limpio before arriving at the small town of Emboscada.
