Prodromi is no longer an independent settlement but a suburb of the ever-increasing Polis, falling within its municipality boundaries. Hotels and tourist apartments are being built and tavernas are being set up, as are supermarkets and other tourist services. In an effort to beautify the village and its surroundings, the original fountain, close to the center of the village, has been restored. The church of Venethkiotisa, now on the administrative boundaries of Prodromi-Polis, is possibly medieval. Only the foundations of the ancient church have survived,

According to tradition, implied even by the name of the village, here, or slightly west of the settlement, were the holy gardens of the Goddess Aphrodite. Pilgrims from Nea Pafos passed through Geroskipou before reaching the temple of Aphrodite, at Kouklia (Palaepafos). At Geroskipou, in the holy gardens of the Goddess, donations, sacrifices and many other activities in honour of Aphrodite were taking place. Even currently a cave in the village is called “Bath of Aphrodite”. Strabo, the Greek geographer and historian, mentions Geroskipou, calling the settlement “lerokipis”. It is also mentioned that

Relics from the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, Kouklia The Lusignan Manor House. This is a 13th c.A.D building, used as the manor house of the Lusignans, who established sugar-cane plantations in the fertile land between the sea and the present-day settlement. Its history is tied up with adventures. In 1426 A.D. it faced the attack of Mamelukes who caused considerable damage to the building. The Turks later on transformed the original edifice into stables for camels and animals. The south sector was recently restored with impressive stone arches in front of a narrow corridor. The remains of the original chateau lie

Sotira archaeological site A dam on the Symvoulos stream has recently been constructed to provide water for the needs of the bases. The visitor to Sotira will most probably concentrate his interest and attention on the archaeological site of the neolithic settlement of Sotira (4500-3900 B.C.). The houses are irregular, circular or ellipsoidal, very close to each other, separated only by very narrow corridors. The foundations are built with stone, while the upper part most probably was made of baked bricks, reeds or even wood covered with mud. It is not yet known whether the settlement was surrounded by walls.

Germasogeia dam Germasogeia, a growing settlement, in spite of the dam, completed in 1968, cannot support the current population. The residents of the village commute to Limassol and the city exercises an important influence. The Germasogeia Dam has a capacity of approximately 13,5 million tonnes of water and is about 50 metres high. The spillway, a necessary feature of every single dam, to be seen on the left of the dam, as one approaches it from the village, is truly impressive. Akrounta. Built on the banks of a tributary of Germasogeia river, it remained for many years unknown to travellers.

The old settlement, on a slope facing Xeros river, is now deserted and uninhabited. On the right bank of the Xeros river, a water-mill still stands in relatively good condition. On a small height, next to the river bed is the Ortos area, where archaeological excavations are being carried out. So far the unearthed findings point out that Ortos was a large settlement, the greatest part of which was eroded away or destroyed

Avakas gorge b) Akamas Region. There are many versions concerning the etymology of Akamas, the most prevalent of which is that of Akamas, the son of Theseus, who arrived in Cyprus after the Trojan war and founded Akamantis, a town in the Akamas region, still unearthed. The true Akamas is the Forest of Akamas in the extreme northwestern part of Pafos. Sometimes, erroneously, the term “Broader Akamas” is used, comprising Laona, part of the northern coastal plain of Pafos, part of the western coastal plain of Chrysochou and often part of the valley of Chrysochou. Akamas can be approached from

The Pentakomo coastline, from the monastery of Agios Georgios Alamanos to Governor’s Beach, is unspoilt, while the coasts themselves have been subjected to such erosion that curious but interesting features have arisen, such as caves, arches, stacks and islands. One such remnant, known by the name “Karavopetra”, has been identified with the Arab incursions on the island. According to tradition, it was here that the corsairs moored their ships before looting and ransacking the land. On a narrow coastal
