A few impressions before starting my tour. Park Hyatt Hamburg is a 5 star luxury hotel in Hamburg’s city center. This post also includes some sightseeing in Hamburg. IMHO, Hamburg is Germany’s most beautiful city. The Moenckebergstrasse is a charming area. It is home to large department stores, fashion boutiques and small retail business). Most of the city’s attractions are within walking diet This includes the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and the historical warehouse dist. The building was renovated and refurbished in the 1990s. The lower floors now feature the upscale Levantehaus shopping mall. The hotel occupies the building’s upper floors.

West Germans spend more on international travel than people from any other country, including the U.S. Income from foreign visitors for 1981 was $6.3 billion; outgo was $17.8 billion, leaving a travel deficit of $11.6 billion, by all odds the largest in the world. Germans average more than twenty-seven days a year vacation time and they work only 31.6 hours a week compared to thirty-five for Americans and thirty-nine for the average Japanese. Where do the Germans travel? Everywhere. Look out from a cliff on the island of Madeira. A solitary swimmer is out 500 yards, pumping away as if

The deluxe hotels are really deluxe; even the water in the bath is tested by a large thermometer to make it the exact temperature desired. Germany has some 250 health resorts, of which Baden Baden is the best known. Here the visitor seeking rejuvenation takes the baths and drinks the waters. Gambling and being seen are part of the appeal. As it is with Australians beer is a way of life for Germans. The Germans think of it as very much a part of the gemutlich life, the agreeable life, also a principal nutrient. Bavarians, particularly, have a reputation for

The town itself is replete with pastry shops, tearooms and taverns. Wurzburg is known for its vineyards and the white wines produced. The local beer and sausage have also acquired a reputation. Germany provides a range of accommodation from youth hostel to hotel, farmhouse to fremdenheimes (rooms for rent in homes), campgrounds to castles.

Wurzburg, a Franconian wine town, has been called a jewel box of the rococo. About an hour-and-a-half by train from Frankfort, it is also a great place to start on Germany’s Romantic Road. The Road runs from the Main River to the Bavarian Alps, through wooded hills, past vineyards, ruins, castles and museum towns. The bishops’ Residenz is an anomaly, a palace fit for a king; the Hofkirche is said to be the most dazzling of all

Berlin, as can be seen on the map, is deep inside another, unfriendly, country, the German Democratic Republic, popularly called East Germany. A major autobahn (superhighway) runs from Hanover, West Germany, all the way across East Germany, passing close to Berlin. Most North American tourists fly into Berlin. The well-known wall dividing Berlin from East Berlin is not a real barrier to tourists, most of whom visit East Berlin as day-trippers. Potsdam, the old Prussian capital, is interesting for its royal architecture. East Germany’s poulation is about seventeen million compared to West Germany’s sixty-two million. East Germany has the highest
