WAIMANU NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE
This state reserve is located on the northern coast of the island of Hawaii. It includes the Waimanu and Waipio Valleys, at the base of the Kohala Mountainswith small gullies, wetlands, beaches, several streams, and some waterfalls. Portions of the reserve are forested, and there are groves of fruit trees.
Activities: A single trail is available for hiking or backpacking: the 7-mile Muliwai Trail, which runs between Waipio and Waimanu Valleys. The trail is steep and rocky in places, and isn’t well-maintained. Seasonal hunting is permitted in the area.
Camping Regulations: There’s one shelter about two-thirds of the distance along the trail, and camping is allowed here as well as at some sites in Waimanu Valley. A permit is required.

Camping is also allowed along several trails on the island of Oahu. Included are the 7-mile Waimano Trail, the 6-mile Manana Trail, and three shorter trails near Hauula. Scenery includes ridges with beautiful views, valleys, streams, and waterfalls. A camping permit is required. Finally, camping is allowed in remote Wailau Valley on the north coast of the island of Molokai. Access is possible by boat when waters are calm, or via an unmaintained trail which crosses private land and requires special permission to use.
