BOISE NATIONAL FOREST

This massive National Forest is in west-central Idaho, near Boise. In the region are parts of several mountain ranges, with rocky peaks over 9,000 feet high, plus deep canyons and valleys, and a number of lakes, rivers, and streams.

! There are meadows, grasslands, and forests of pine and fir, with aspen. Included are over a halfmillion acres of old-growth trees. Elk, mule deer, black bear, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, and lynx are among the wildlife.

This National Forest has one designated wilderness area, which consists of 331,600 acres of the

2,361,767-acre Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, the country’s largest such area outside of Alaska.

Activities: Backpacking and hiking are possible on about 1,000 miles of trails. Difficulty ranges from easy to strenuous. Many trails are suitable for horseback riding, and mountain bikes are allowed on trails outside of the designated wilderness area.

Limited rafting, canoeing, and kayaking are available on several of the rivers here. Cross-country skiing is a winter possibility on some trails.

Fishing is another option, and hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout most of Boise National Forest, as are campfires, except near public use areas or where otherwise restricted. No permits are required.
