ROTHROCK STATE FOREST
94,000 acres. Consisting of a 79,000-acre tract along with other units in central Pennsylvania, this state forest covers a number of mountain ridgeswith sandstone formations, other rugged terrain, and views from elevations as high as 2,400 feet.
Included are the 4,800-acre Thickhead Wild Area and five small designated Natural Areas, with streams, swamps, and the Juniata River. There are forests of oak, spruce, and fir, with some
virgin hemlock and white pine, plus rhododendron and mountain laurel. Among the wildlife are deer, bear, and fox.
Activities: A number of trails are available for hiking and backpacking, including a 40-mile section of the Mid State Trail (see entry page 252). Cross-country skiing is possible on some trails in the winter. Fishing is permitted, as is hunting in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed on most of these lands, as are campfires, except i where restricted or posted otherwise. Campsites must be at least 100 feet from trails and 200 feet from roads. A permit is necessary if one chooses to ! camp for more than one night at a single location.
