Wisconsin Guide for Tourist
NORTHERN HIGHLANDS-AMERICAN LEGION STATE FOREST
Located in the northern part of the state, Northern HighlandsAmerican Legion is by far the largest of Wisconsin’s state forests.
There are over 900 lakes here, some of which are remote, along with several rivers, numerous streams, and some swamps. Wildlife includes deer, black bear, coyote, fox, and bald eagle.
Activities: The forest has more than 18 miles of trails for hiking and backpacking, including the 15-mile Lumberjack Trail, and over 30 miles of trails designated for cross-country skiing during the snow season. Snowshoeing is another winter option.
Canoeing is available on many of the lakes and some streams. Canoes may be rented nearby. Biking is allowed on old roads in the forest but not on hiking trails. Fishing is also possible, and hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Backpack camping is allowed along both the Lumberjack Trail and a state snowmobile trail. In addition, there are 118 designated sites for canoe-camping along waterways in the forest. Maximum stay at these campsites is one night. A permit must be obtained for canoe-camping and backpacking.
Thirteen other primitive wilderness campsites are available by reservation, some of them accessible only by canoe or boat. A fee is charged for these campsites, but not for other backpack camping or canoe-camping sites. Campfires are allowed.
