ACCOMMODATIONS

While accommodations in Barcelona are easy to spot, finding a room can be more difficult. During the busier travel months (June-September or December), just wandering up and down Las Ramblas looking for a place to stay can quickly turn into a frustrating experience. If you want to stay in the touristy areas Barri Gotic or Las Ramblas make reservations weeks, or even months, in advance. Consider staying outside the tourist hub of the Ciutat Vella; there are plenty of great hostels in I’Eixample and Gracia that will have more vacancies.

Hostels in Spain are generally not of the dorm variety, but rather a private, basic room, with or without a private bathroom. Because heat and electricity are expensive in Spain, travelers should not assume that rooms have AC, TV, or phone unless specified; most come with fans only in the summer and some places do not have heat in the winter.

LOWER BARRI GOTIC

Hostal Levante, Baixada de San Miguel 2 (933 17 95 65; www.hostallevante.com).

Casa de Huespedes Mari-Luz, C. Palau 4 (fax 933 17 34 63; pensionmari-luz@menta.net). M: Liceu. Tidy 4- to 6-person dorm rooms and a few comfortable doubles. Reservations require a credit card. In summer dorms ‚16; doubles ‚41. Offseason reduced prices. MCV.

Hostal Avinyo, C. Avinyo 42 (933 18 79 45; www.hostalavinyo.com). M: Drassanes. Rooms with couches, high ceilings, fans, safes, and stained-glass windows. Singles ‚22; doubles ‚34, with bath ‚47; triples ‚4866.

Albergue de Juventud Kabul, PI. Reial 17 (933 18 51 90; www.kabul-hostel.com). M: Liceu. Legendary among backpackers; squeezes in up to 200 frat boys at a time. Key deposit ‚10. Laundry ‚2.50. No reservations. Dorms ‚20.

Hotel ToledanoHostal Residencia Capitol, Las Ramblas 138 (933 01 08 72; www.hoteltoledano.com). M: Catalunya. UPPER BARRI GOTIC

Between C. Fontanella and C. Ferran, accommodations are pricier but more serene than in the lower Barri Gotic. Early reservations are obligatory in summer.

The nearest Metro stop is Catalunya, unless otherwise specified.

Hostal Campi, C. Canuda 4 (sfax 933 01 35 45; hcampi@terra.es). A great bargain with large balconies. Call ahead to resene 9am-8pm. Prices vary, but generally doubles ‚42, with bath ‚49; triples ‚5868.

Hotel Lloret, Las Ramblas 125 (933 17 33 66). M: Catalunya. New rooms include large bathrooms, tasteful furniture, AC, heat, TV, and phone. Worth the cost. Singles ‚45-48; doubles ‚75-81; triples ‚89-95; quads ‚105. AmExMCV.

Hostal Malda, C. Pi 5 (933 17 30 02), inside a shopping center. M: Liceu. Keeps rooms occupied year-round by offering quality rooms at an unbeatable price. Reservations recommended. Singles ‚13; doubles ‚26; triples with shower ‚36. Cash only. O Hostal Residencia Lausanne, Av. Portal de I’Angel 24 (933 02 11 39). M: Catalunya. Small hostel includes a posh lounge with TV and vending machines. Doubles ‚48, with bath ‚65. Cash only.

Pension Dali, C. Boqueria 12 (s933 18 55 90; pensiondali@wanadoo.es). M: Liceu. Designed as a religious house by Domenech i Montaner and originally run by a friend of Dali. All rooms have TVs. In the high season, doubles ‚47, with bath ‚53; triples with bath ‚75; quads with bath ‚85. MCV.

LA RIBERA

Be careful in the areas near the port and farther from Las Ramblas.
