Driving south from the post office for about half a mile along the coast brings you to a fork in the road. The main road swings right and ends after 200 metres at the public car park and the entrance to the Links caravan site. Although this is a static caravan site, they do allow a few touring caravans during the summer. The car park has its own toilet and shower block, which is a real bonus when returning from a dive. At weekends during the summer and especially on Sundays and Bank Holidays, the car park gets really crammed with divers’ and anglers’ cars and boats, often queuing up to get in, because it is the best launching site in the area. There is ample space for changing without the danger of people complaining, although discretion is still called for because it is a public place. There is also no need to take your car and trailer somewhere else after launching, as you do at Seahouses. The real bonus with this site is that there is a tractor and full-time driver (paid for by Berwick Council) to launch and recover the boat, for a fee, between 0900 hrs and 1800 hrs, although you used to be able – and may still be able – to push your boat down to the beach free of charge. Anyone arriving back after 1800 hrs will either have to go to Seahouses or wait until the next morning, because the barrier is locked. The total cost of launching with the tractor used to be quite reasonable, but is less so now.
