Who says you can’t get into Harvard? This basement restaurant advertises honest food, real beer,” and that’s exactly what you get. It’s a favorite lunch haunt for businesspeople in the Square; daily lunch express specials are $5-$6, speedily delivered. Mine sampled a grilled pesto chicken sandwich on focaccia with roast peppers and artichoke hearts. Lots of burgers, too; more interesting is a blackened catfish sandwich for $6.25. Entrees, mostly $8-$9, range from a vegetable paella to chicken pot pie. The handsome, dark wood decor features roomy booths which encourage hanging out
Deciding what to eat is tough; picking a beer is even more challenging. As the name implies, John Harvard’s does its own brewing on the premises. There are several varieties of ale; the malty flavor of Dublin stout and more patriotic American lagers. Not for nothing was this place voted the Best Microbrewery in Boston by Boston magazine. John Harvard’s also offers live entertainment on Mondays from 9 p.m. to midnight, and Tuesdays from 10 pm. to 12:30 AM. with no cover charge. The restaurant itself is open for lunch and dinner daily.
