Located in South West Kenya is the Masai Mara reserve, a continuation of the Serengeti. This game reserve is named after one of the tribes of Kenya remaining, the Masai Mara people. A Kenyan tribe of semi nomadic people divided into sub tribes who share the land and live according to their old culture and traditions.
Now days the Masai Mara have a population of around 900,000 people and are traditionally goat and cattle herders, which is almost entirely their whole economy. The use their animals for meat, milk and even drink the cow’s blood as one of their sacred traditions.

You may also recognise the Masai people from their red clothing and famous jumping dance. This jumping dance is a chance for the young males of the tribe. This dance is to show their strength and agility to the other members of the tribe.
The Masai Mara reserve is also famous for the Serengeti annual migration between July and October. Whilst in the game reserve you are sure to zebra’s, wildebeest and gazelles followed closely by hungry predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyena’s as well as members of the ‘big five’.
The best time of year to visit is between July and October to view one of nature’s most brilliant displays of the circle of life. Over a million herbivores brave the migration of the Serengeti in search of fresh food and to chase the rains.
It is one of the world natural wonders and is something that must be seen to be believed. Alternatively the Serengeti game reserve itself is another game reserve you are able to view this spectacular event.
Getting there
Due to the poor quality of roads in Kenya, especially in the wet season most tourists prefer to fly into the Masai Mara Game Reserve.
Most safari packages, whether with a tour operator or a safari lodge will include the flight from Nairobi in the costs however if you wish to blog it all yourself then Kenya Airways has 2 flights a day directly to the reserve which takes around 45mins. If you were to drive the trip will it would take around 6 hours.
To see an abundance of wildlife and large herds the best of time of year to go is for the annual migration. In this game reserve the animals pass through between July and October each year.
Check with local reports online for any updates on when the migration is due to take place on the current year that you are travelling, after all we don’t control the migration, the rain does. If you’re visiting for the bird life that also migrates to the Masai Mara then the best time of year is between January and March.
