RULES FOR NON-PRESCRIPTION AND PRESCRIPTION DRUGS FOR TRAVEL

Some liquid, gel or aerosol items are exempt from the above restrictions if they are considered to be essential non-prescription medicines, like contact lens solution, gel cap pills and cough syrup. I wish they’d add sunscreen to this list.

Prescription medicine, including creams and lotions, are also exempt from these limits and can travel outside of the security baggie. The name on the label must match the passenger’s ticket or boarding pass and must be clear and professionally printed with the medication or manufacturer’s name. Pack these in a separate clear bag and show them to the screening officer.

Keep your security baggie accessible in an outside pocket of your suitcase. Drop it in the tray at security, along with laptop computer, pocket items. Though procedures can be inconsistent from airport to airport, I always remove my coat, belt, scarf and shoes to avoid the possible delay of rescreening. Send your valuables through last, just as you are entering the scanner and keep an eye on them.

FA TIP: Pressurisation can cause normally leak-proof bottles to spill their contents. Lids should have an extra ring inside, like most water bottles do. One way to tell if a bottle is secure is to fill it, squeeze out some air and put the lid on. Shake or tap it against your hand. If any liquid comes out or the bottle reverts to its undented size, it will leak in flight. One option is to place it inside a smaller snack-sized zipper bag and tuck into your security baggie but beware – this will take up extra space.
