PACIFIC CREST TRAIL MAP CALIFORNIA

1,630 miles in California (2,638 total). Extending all the way from Canada to Mexico, the Pacific Crest Trail is one of this country’s greatest long-distance wilderness trails. The largest portion is in California, where it runs the length of the Sierras as well as through the southern Cascades.

Scenery along the way couldn’t be more magnificent, with high rugged peaks, spectacular vistas, and an endless succession of alpine lakes. Elevations range from 500 feet to 13,200 feet near Mount Whitney. The trail also crosses some desert in southern California.

For most of its length the Pacific Crest Trail is on National Forest, National Park, and BLM lands, along with some state parks and private lands. Difficulty ranges from easy to extremely strenuous. Horses are allowed. Higher elevations are likely to be snow-free only from July through September.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed freely along most of the trail, except where posted otherwise. When the trail is on state park or private lands, however, camping is generally restricted to designated sites.

Campsites in National Forests and National Parks should be at least 100 feet from water sources and the trail. Meadows, soft grassy areas, and other vegetation should be avoided in choosing a campsite.

! A permit is required to camp in Yosemite as well as Sequoia and Kings Canyons National Parks, and also in many of the National Forest wilderness areas. A single permit may be obtained from a National Forest or National Park office for a trip of any length on the trail.

A fire permit is also necessary if one wishes to build campfires or to use a stove while camping along the trail in this state. Fires are banned in some areas and/or above certain elevations. It’s recommended that a stove be carried for cooking.
