Again, good closeout deals in top-name audio and video.

For greater savings, though, check the discontinued and refurbished stereo components at the two locations noted above. The brands most frequently seen are Pioneer, Sony, and Philips. Mine found a Sony five-disc CD changer, reduced from $229 to $189, and a Carver Pro Logic receiver, $150 off at $649. There are almost always similar bargains, usually in very limited quantities. The salespeople are very helpful, and will also leave you alone if you prefer. No hard sell. All stores are open daily from 10 A.M. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 10-6.

Q Audio

95 Vassar SL, Cambridge; (617) 547-2727

It’s a natural a used audio place on the MIT campus. Q bills itself as the world’s smallest hi-fi shop but actually has quite a lot of equipment, with plenty of options for the budget (but serious) audiophile. New, used, and B-stock, or factory blemished items, are all sold at discount.

The brands cover the spectrum, but mosdy favor high-end stuff: Paradigm, Marantz, Harman/Kardon, Carver, and the like. Speakers by Klipsch, Polk, and Boston Acoustics were recently selling at 50% off list prices. Plus refurbished turntables, as well as the latest in DAT and satellite TV toys. Among used items, Mine noted a Pioneer receiver for $88, an NAD compact disc player for $125, and a Yamaha cassette deck for $99.

Used goods carry an unconditional 14-day money-back guarantee, plus a store warranty of anywhere from 30 days to two years. You can also bring in your own pieces for cash (if they can sell them), trade, or consignment. Open weekdays from 10 A.M. to 7 P.M. Saturdays 10-6, Sundays 12-5.
