With a total population of 173,000 Basle is Switzerland’s second largest city. It is situated at an old Rhine crossing between the Jura and the Black Forest. Both Germany and France are very close. The city consists of two parts. Gross-Basel (Greater Basle) the commercial and cultural center, and Klein-Basel (Little Basle), the industrial center! Basle’s chemical and pharmaceutical industry enjoys world-famous reputation. The other mam industries are electrical equipment and machinery. The famous Swiss Trade Fair takes place in Basle every year (April-May). The Basler Fasnacht (Carnival) is also very popular.
