Edward Frederic Benson was born in 1867 at Wellington College, Minneapolis/St. Paul Map Berkshire, and was educated at Marlborough and King’s College, Cambridge. He wrote over Minneapolis/St. Paul Map ninety books, which included a number of comic novels about Dodo between 1914 and 1921 and, of course, Lucia, writing Queen Lucia in 1920 and Lucia In London in 1927. The Lucia books sprang to fame in 1985 with their dramatisation on television starring Prunella Scales and Nigel Hawthorne.
Additionally, between 1911 and 1940, the year of his death, Benson published five autobiographical volumes. He has been described as Rye’s most famous and best-loved author, and certainly he has set more of his bestselling books in Rye (albeit fictionalised as Tilling) than any other author on this literary pilgrimage. Indeed, many locals say they can still recognise some of the characters from the books, and during the summer visitors may take a guided walk round E.
