SIUSLAW NATIONAL FOREST
Situated in western Oregon’s Coast Range, Siuslaw National Forest covers an area of small but rugged mountains, with 4,097-foot Marys Peak the highest point. Also included are canyons, lakes, streams, and some Pacific coastline.
Of special interest near the ocean is the 25,658-acre Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, which has 400-foot dunes and 40 miles of coastline. Elsewhere there are meadows and conifer forests. Wildlife includes elk, deer, bear, and cougar, with whale, seal, and other marine mammals along the coast.
The National Forest has three relatively small wilderness areas: the 9,173-acre Cummins Creek Wilderness, the 7,486-acre Rock Creek Wilderness, and the 5,798-acre Drift Creek Wilderness.
Activities: About 100 miles of trails are available for hiking and backpacking, including a section of the Oregon Coast Trail. Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. Horses are allowed on some trails. There are many opportunities for
fishing alongside lakes, streams, and rivers. Hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout the National Forest, as are campfires, except near public use areas or where otherwise prohibited. Some designated sites are also available for use. No permits are necessary.
