BIG SOUTH FORK NATIONAL RIVER AND RECREATION AREA
120,000 acres. This National River and Recreation Area features the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and several tributaries. It’s located near and alongside the northeast border of Tennessee, and extends into southeast Kentucky.
The river flows through a rugged cliff-lined gorge, and there’s a large area of protected land on either side. Included here are sandstone arches, caves, and creeks with waterfalls.
Activities: The Cumberland River is very popular for white-water canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. Commercial rafting outfits run trips on the river.
There are over 100 miles of trails for backpacking and hiking, including a section of the 257-mile Sheltowee Trace Trail (see entry page 160). Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous.
Some trails are open to horseback riding. Horses may be rented in the area, and guided horse trips are available. Fishing is possible along the river and streams. Hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout the area, as are campfires, except where otherwise prohibited. No permits are required. A stove is recommended for cooking.
