Bull grey seals are dark grey-brown in colour and fairly large, measuring almost three metres in length and weighing as much as 285 kilos. It is always wise to be wary of bull seals, especially during the breeding season. Never get between one and its only route to the sea and do not block its way in a dead-end space such as a cave, as it may possibly lash out with its head and bite the nearest part of your body. The breeding season is the time when they are at their rattiest and it is during this time that many savage fights break out among rival bulls vying for females. They inflict some devastatingly nasty wounds on each other. A grey seal cow is almost half the size of the bull and is coloured grey on the upper parts with creamy patches underneath. They are ready to breed after three or four years and have a gestation period of eleven and a half months, usually giving birth to one pup. The pups are born creamy white and weigh something like 15 kilos. Seal’s milk contains 50% fat and is extremely nutritious, so as a result the pups put on weight rapidly at something like 1.7 kilos a day.
