FLAMBEAU RIVER STATE FOREST
Flambeau River State Forest in northern Wisconsin includes over 60 miles of the North and South
Forks of the Flambeau River. There are also many streams, several lakes, and a number of ponds. Among the wildlife are white-tailed deer, black bear, and bald eagle.
Activities: The most popular recreational activity in this state forest is canoeing on the Flambeau River, along with kayaking and rafting. Some stretches of white water are included.
Cross-country skiing is available on a network of trails. Backpacking and hiking are allowed, but there are no trails designated specifically for these activities.
Some little-used roads, snowmobile trails, and cross-country ski trails provide the best access on foot. Fishing is possible by the rivers and lakes. Hunting is allowed in season.
Camping Regulations: A free permit is required in order to camp in this forest. For those floating the Flambeau, camping is allowed for one night only at designated sites along the river. Fires are restricted to established fire rings.
