While the beaches of Kos Town (pop. 12,500) draw a young party crowd, rural Kos attracts the traveler in search of serene mountain villages. At the sanctuary of liAsclepeion, 4km southwest of Kos Town, Hippocrates opened the world’s first medical school in the 5th century BC. In the summer, mini-trains (15 min. every hr. ‚.50-1.20.) run there from Kos Town. (Open Su and Tu-Sa 8am-6:30pm. ‚3, students ‚2.) The island’s best beaches stretch along Southern Kos to Kardamene and are all accessible by bus; stops are by request. Agios Theologos, south of Limionas, is a pebbly beach perfect for night swimming. Most bars are located in Exarhia, in the Old City past PI. Platonou, or along Por- firou, between Averof and Zouroundi. Runway models loom on giant television screens at the Fashion Club, Kanari 2, the hottest spot in town. (Cover ‚10, includes 1 drink. Open daily llpm-4am.) The Hamam Club, inland from the PI. Diagoras taxi station, is a former bathhouse turned dance club. Heaven, on Zouroudi, opposite the beach, is a large, popular disco. The island of Nisryos, with an active volcano and beaches black with volcanic rock, is an idyllic daytrip; DANE Sea Lines ferries run from to Nisryos from Kos (1.5 hr. 2 per week, ‚7.40).
Ferries run to: Athens (ll-15hr. 2-3 per day, ‚16); Patmos (4hr. 1-2 per day, ‚10); and Rhodes (4hr. 2-3 per day, ‚16). The Greek National Tourist Office (EOT) is at Vas. Georgiou 1. ( 22420 24 460.
