Cashel sits at the foot of the 90m SRock of Cashel (ak.a. St. Patrick’s Rock), a huge limestone outcropping topped by medieval buildings. (Open Mar.-Sept. daily 9:30am-5:30pm; Oct.-Feb. M-F 9:30am-5:30pm. Free.) Down the cow path from the Rock lie the ruins of Hore Abbey, built by Cistercian monks and presently inhabited by sheep. The GPA-Bolton Library, on John St. houses ecclesiastical texts and rare manuscripts, including a 1550 edition of Machiavelli’s II Principe and the world’s smallest book. (62 511. Call for tours.) The internationally acclaimed Bru Boru Heritage Centre, at the base of the Rock, stages traditional music and dance perfor mances; participation is encouraged. (61 122. Bus Eireann (61 333) leaves from the Bake House on Main St. for: Cork (lVfehr. 6 per day, ‚12); Dublin (3hr. 6 per day, ‚16); and limerick (lhr. 5 per day, ‚12).
