The Guia del Ocio, sold at newsstands (‚0.85), lists clubs, pubs, and cafes. The most boisterous nightspots belong to Calle Pedro Antonio de Alarcon, running from PI. Albert Einstein to Ancha de Gracia, while hip new bars and clubs line Calle Elvira from Carcel to C. Cedran. Gay bars cluster around Carrera del Darro.

Planta Baja, C. Horno de Abad 11. Live bands play regularly within the concrete confines of this techno dance club. Wildly popular with students. Beer ‚1.80. Cover ‚3. Open from fall until early July Th-Sa 10pm-6am.

Kasbah, C. Caldereria Nueva 4. Relax amidst the comforts of this candlelit cafe. Arab pastries and an exhaustive selection of Moroccan teas (‚1.80). Open daily 3pm-3am.

Fondo Resetvado, Cuesta de Sta. Ines, left off Carrera del Darro, far beyond PI. Santa Ana. A popular gay bar with a mixed crowd that parties hard. Beer ‚2.60. Mixed drinks ‚3.60. Open daily llpm-late.

El Angel Azul, C. Lavadero de las Tablas 15. Well established gay bar with a basement dance floor and curtained booths. Monthly drag shows and striptease contests. Beer ‚2.40. Open daily midnight-5am.

HIKING AND SKIING NEAR GRANADA: SIERRA NEVADA

The peaks of Mulhacen (3481m) and Veleta (3470m), Spain’s highest, sparkle with snow and buzz with tourists for most of the year. Ski season runs from December to April. The rest of the year, tourists hike, parasail, and take jeep tours. Call Cetursa (958 24 91 11) for info on outdoor activities. The Autocares Bonal bus (958 27 31 00), between the bus station in Granada and Veleta, is a bargain (9am departure, 5pm return; ‚5.40).
