645 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge; (617) 354-4455 Well, this has to be Mine’s favorite, just from the name alone. Fortunately, there’s more to recommend it than that. Cheapo has a huge collection of records and tapes, along with CDs. This long, narrow store, crammed from floor to ceiling on two levels, is a bit tough on claustro-phobics but the music sure makes it worthwhile, especially downstairs.
Here you’ll find secondhand LPs and tapes from $1.99 to $5.99, with CDs around $7.99. A special rack of CDs under $5 boasts a wide selection. Cheapo gets high marks for variety; both floors have every kind of music you can think of. Rock, of course (lots of oldies), soul, Latin, country often in great detail. From the South alone there are sections for Dixieland, Cajun and zydeco, blues and how many places have an entire three-section bin dedicated to Louisiana Swamp Music? Or an extensive collection of 60s Surf tunes? None too many. They also have over fifty thousand 45rpm singles. Wow. Open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 am. to 6 p.m. (Thursdays and Fridays and Sundays from 11-5.
