Walk underneath the Central Artery from Faneuil Hall to the North End, and one of the first things you see is Pace’s. This packed, bustling market is not a wholesaler but has lots and lots of fresh cheese, bread, and pasta as well as imported specialty items, like olives and Nutella, that sinfully yummy Italian chocolate-ha-zelnut sauce. The prices are very reasonable, making this a sort of microcosm of the North End all in one stop. Open from 7-7, Mondays through Saturdays.
A few doors down, you’ll find La Fauci & Sons, at 46 Cross Street, telephone (617) 523-1158. They offer great prices on fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly if you’re buying in bulk. Open Mondays through Saturdays from 7 am. to 5:30 p.m.
